Yes, you do. You should at least backup your files in DVD-RW or mobile harddisk once per month. You should also backup your emails in the PC. The location of files with emails are :

1. Eudora : C:\Eudora



2. Outlook and Outlook Express : C:\Documents and Settings\ms-off1\Local Settings\Application Data

Your IP address MUST be assigned by IT Team in the School of Business; otherwise you may collide with the IP address of other users.

TOS 1 staff are eligible for a new PC every 3 years. New PCs are usually bought in summer holiday every year.

There is a yearly charge for SPSS, AMOS and SAS. SPSS and AMOS are charged in 1 June every year. SAS is charged in 1 July every year. You can either pay by your research grant or ask for funding from the School Office. You can ask for costing information from IT Team. IT Team will install software for you once you have the funding.

Vendor like Dell, HP and Lenovo would offer discount laptop for Staff and Students every year. Normally they will have booth in HKU in Aug and Sep to sell discount laptops.

The performance of PC tends to degrade as it ages. You can improve its performance by :

1. Delete temp files : Click "Start" -> "All Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "System Tools" -> "Disk Cleanup"



2. Defragment the harddisk : Click "Start" -> "All Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "System Tools" -> "Disk Defragmenter"

Normally nobody would monitor your internet activity in the office. However, if you commit a crime in the internet like illegal downloading of sofware, Computer Centre will be able to track you down and thus you may be liable to legal prosecution. Therefore DO NOT download illegal softwares, songs or movies.
