Post-liberalization industry consolidation: An extended Chandlerian perspective |
| Abstract: |
This study examines the emergence of large, nation-wide firms and the consequential industry consolidation in China. Unlike the experience in developed economies, well documented by Chandler, industry consolidation in transitional economies is strongly conditioned by the liberalization policy. Using the recent consolidation of the Chinese beer industry, this paper reconfirms the importance of scale and scope economies as major drivers of this process, especially during the earlier stages. The later stages appear to be more strongly conditioned by political capital. Geographic proximity and similarity in ownership structure help firms acquire and integrate other firms throughout all stages of the consolidation process.. |
