Two of the school's research areas, Economic Policy and Business Strategy Studies and Chinese Management Studies, relate directly to business concerns in Asia. The university has identified both areas as being among its fourteen areas of excellence. The school encompasses several centers that conduct research on different business-related issues. They are:

The Hong Kong Institute of Economics and Business Strategy (HIEBS)
Hong Kong's competitiveness in the past has been achieved with policies that protect private property rights, maintain open and competitive markets, and limit the role of the government. There is, however, controversy over the proper economic policies and business strategies that will bring prosperity in the future. The establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the onset of the Asian financial and economic crises have provided an opportunity to re-examine our economic policies and business strategies.

Our School aims to use the dynamic economy of Hong Kong and its role in China and the Asia Pacific as a focus for becoming one of the leading international centers for the study of economic policy and business strategy. The focus of our activities in this area is The Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation Study Center (APECSC), which in collaboration with the Hong Kong Center for Economic Research (HKCER) has produced over fifty original and authoritative monographs and has conducted dozens of research projects covering a broad range of business, economic, and social issues. Many of these studies and projects were undertaken in collaboration with scholars from abroad, for example from the University of California Pacific Rim Committee, the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, the University of Chicago, and Syracuse University among others. It has played a leading role in producing highly acclaimed and influential economic policy and business strategy studies on Hong Kong.

The Chinese Management Centre (CMC)
Students are exposed to a global perspective when they participate in our exchange programmes with major international universities or attend summer workshops taught by visiting faculty members from leading institutions abroad. Students from our partner institutions in, for example, Mainland China, Europe, North America, and Japan also come to Hong Kong to take courses at the School of Business, further contributing to a rich and stimulating environment.

The Centre for Financial Innovation and Risk Management (CFIRM)
The recent financial turmoil in Asia and the globalization of the world financial markets is a forceful reminder to governments and corporations of the volatility of global financial markets. The CFIRM investigates issues relating to innovations in regional and global financial markets and managing the risks involved. It has contributed to the growing body of knowledge on the development, design, and maintenance of different financial investment tools.

The Hong Kong-Shanghai Business Education and Research Centre and the HKU-Tsinghua Business Education and Research Centre. These two collaborative research centers are based in China. The Hong Kong-Shanghai Business Education and Research Centre is a joint endeavor with Fudan University's School of Management, and the HKU-Tsinghua Business Education and Research Centre is a joint initiative with Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management in Beijing. In addition to developing business cases, the centers facilitate research collaboration, undertake faculty and student exchange programs, and co-supervise graduate students' research.
